Every year a colourful regatta of decorated fishing boats and yachts passes in front of the Puntarenas beaches in the Golf of Nicoya in honour of the Day of the Virgin of the Sea (Día de la Virgen del Mar).

One of the boats carries an image of the patron saint of Puntarenas, the Virgin of Monte Carmelo. A flurry of masses, processions, concerts, dances, sports contests and fireworks makes up the rest of the homage-paying festivities.
