Aruba Carnival

Aruba’s carnival is the biggest annual event around the island. A vibrant display of pre-Lent exuberance, it includes parades with dancers in fantastic fancy dress, competitions and a plethora of ‘jump-up’ street parties.

Don’t miss Tivoli’s Torch Parade in Oranjestaad and the Grand Parades in both San Nicolas and Oranjestad.

His final event is the Grand Evening Parade, which includes the ceremonial burning of King Momo, symbol of the flesh, on the eve of Ash Wednesday. It’s all accompanied by music, from the Antillean “tumba” to calypso and steel bands of the English Caribbean and the salsa beat of Latin countries.

Melbourne Big Day Out

Oistins Fish Festival

Oistins is the main fishing town in Barbados, and each Easter this festival offers a programmers which spans every aspect of fishing.

Visitors can enjoy boat racing, fish boning and greasy pole competitions, a Coastguard Exhibition, food stalls, arts and crafts, dancing, singing and road races.

This is a chance to hear Caribbean music and dance up an appetite for traditional Bajan fare, from fish cakes to fried fish, pudding and souse, all washed down with a cool Banks Beer. Sydney New Madri Gras Festival

The Sydney Mardi Gras is a world-famous festival that celebrates queerness in all its forms. In 2008 the event celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Taking place in the heart of the city, this month-long cultural extravaganza incorporates exhibitions, music, plays, art and literature, expressing the essence of what it means to be gay in modern society. It ends in a parade and a big wild party, saturated with sexual diversity and exploring fetishism with defiant abandon.

Mardi Gras’ highlights include a Fair Day as well as a myriad of gigs, plays, exhibitions and clubs, amidst a warm-hearted party atmosphere.

The Mardi Gras Parade, which marches through the city centre, is one of the most extraordinary street events you are ever likely to see. Thousands of funky floats carry a cast of beautiful drag queens, exotic dancers and tanned muscle men. Snowtop

When: Mar 2009

The San Miguel Snowtop competition is a gruelling mountaineering event that mixes personal challenge with high-level skiing at Soldeu.

Run as an Everest expedition, competitors have to set up a base camp before taking to the slopes and ascending the Pic d’Encampadana on cross-country skis, then overcoming a vertical drop of 8848 metres, the height of Mount Everest.

Teams have up to 14 hours to cover Mt Everest’s height, with a total of 21 ascents, each with 422 metres of vertical drop. The winner receives €4000 prize money and all entrants who complete the course are awarded an Everest Summiteers diploma.

Recoleta Wine Tour Urbano

For three nights Recoleta Wine Tour Urbano takes over the street of Arenales, between Montevideo and Cerrito, in the opulent neighborhood of Recoleta.

The soirée repeats itself on three separate evenings, always on the third Friday in March, April and May. Each block is sponsored by a different wine-producing state and some of the nearby restaurants offer special menus (as always an abundance of top notch steak) to mark the occasion.
