Where: Anguilla
Anguilla really lets its hair down for the fantastic Summer Festival during July and August every year. Beauty pageants, swim suit competitions, colorful parades, calypso contests, beach parties and boat races keep the island positively buzzing with a carnival vibe.
Favourite events each year are the glitzy pageants that nudge Anguilla’s flowering beauties into the spotlight, such as the Miss Anguilla Queen Pageant and the Miss Anguilla Swim Suit Competition.
Anguilla’s national sport is sailing and the event is famed for its abundance of boat races. Don’t miss those on the public holidays, August Monday and August Thursday (on 4 and 7 August this year) at Sandy Ground and Meads Bay respectively. August Monday kicks off with J’ouvert, the classic Caribbean carnival event that features manic dancing and singing in the streets from the crack of dawn till noon and ends with a huge beach party at Sandy Ground.
Calypso is the form of song that the African slaves created to communicate to each other and remains at the core of Anguillian history and culture. Due to its popularity, the festival’s Calypso Monarch contest expanded to include Junior Calypso and Female Calypso competitions and is undoubtedly worth seeing.
