Sao Paulo’s Pride parade is one of the biggest in the world, with more than two million people in attendance every year. Supporting events include award ceremonies, a cultural fair, parties, meetings and debates.
The event has been running since 1997 with the aim of raising awareness and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups and the creation of public policies to protect their rights. Last year, the parade celebrated its tenth anniversary, with attendees rising from just 3000 in 1997 to two million in 2006.
The parade usually starts in Avenida Paulista, in the financial centre, near Brigadeiro metro station, moving north-west and turning right just after metro Consolacao towards Praca Roosevelt and onto Praca da República.
